a flooded, furniture-filled weekend

This past weekend, Chris and I took a day-trip to the Ikea in Atlanta, which turned into a two-day trip due to running out of time. We spent so much time looking around on Saturday (something like six hours) that we didn’t even make it to the warehouse to pick things out. So, we had to stay the night and get a hotel, which turned out to be more fortune than misfortune because while we were on our little trip, Nashville flooded.

We didn’t really know about this until we were in our hotel room, so it’s good that we took so much time at Ikea or else we would have been in for a really big surprise when we got into the Nashville area. I spent the evening at the hotel perusing flood pictures, reading comments on Facebook, and worrying about the condition of the house (and, more importantly, the safety of my cats).

Turns out, no damage was done to the house, and my kitties were fine (though rather hungry and whiny). Spring Hill didn’t seem to get hit quite as badly as places like Franklin and downtown Nashville, which is in pretty bad condition. From what I’ve heard, it’s still flooded in places and they’re running out of clean water.

On Sunday, we spent several more hours at Ikea and finally made it out of there around 4:00 or 5:00. And without our furniture. Because we got so much, we weren’t sure we could safely fit it all into Chris’s dad’s F-150. Also, driving back with the chance of torrential downpours and flooding and potentially ruining $3000+ worth of furniture was not a risk we wanted to take. So we’re having the furniture delivered to us next Saturday. And for only $190, which is a pretty good deal considering just how much we bought.

All three of those carts are ours. And those are only three out of the total of FIVE carts we had (plus the cart we had on Saturday full of stuff from the Marketplace). The other two contained the two sections of our couch. Once we get everything delivered next weekend, I think I’m going to place everything in a big pile and take a picture of it. We really did get a TON of stuff, and although we spent a lot of money, it was well worth it for the amount of furniture we got.

I would like to note that while I love Ikea, I do not want my house to look like it’s straight from an Ikea display. Although we bought several large items that are obviously from Ikea (couch, dining table, bed, etc.), I am going to do my damnedest to make this place look like it had some real thought put into it. I appreciate the modernness (and price) that Ikea offers, but I love the eclectic look and want to give this place the personality that it so desperately needs. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m excited about it.
